Drawing on Old West architecture from the pioneer era, Vitale will create a multistory wooden structure for Performa 13, activated by live performances. The installation is a continuation of Vitale’s sculptural inquiry into frontier history, visible in her series of burned bridges, bullet-ridden outhouses, false fronts, grave markers and most recently railroad track intersections. Twisting idiosyncratic forms from American homesteading into surprising visual juxtapositions, Vitale’s structures will be the physical set for a string of hallucinatory vignettes depicting rattlesnake-bitten ranchers, wisecracking astrologers and burlesque movers and shakers.
